Chelsea signing Eden Hazard brushed off criticism
that he was using social media for selfish purposes insisting that his
fans enjoy keeping in touch with him.
The former Lille player was involved in a drawn-out transfer saga with Manchester City, Manchester United as well as Chelsea courting his services. The Belgian remained coy as to his final destination but he kept giving hints via social media website Twitter and other media outlets.
He confessed that he was enamoured with all three clubs and had agreed personal terms with all of them. It appeared as if only the prospect of ensuring regular first-team action would be the deciding factor for the Belgian.
Eventually, Chelsea's Champions League win convinced the 21-year-old to decide to move to London instead of Manchester.
His announcement had been made despite the lack of an official confirmation from either Lille or Chelsea but the Ligue 1 Player of the Year insists that he would not stop tweeting or interacting with his fans despite some expressing annoyance at the continual stream of updates.
"As a boy I followed my idols on the internet. It is wonderful to be able to do that," he said.
"And now Twitter is part of life. You have to make it work for you.
"Perhaps social media will be completely obsolete in two years. You must move with the times."
The playmaker believes that his fans, which number around 331,000, are more than happy to keep in touch with him.
"The fans are happy that they can keep up to date with me."
The Premier League can be expected to hear a lot more tweets from the Belgian international in the coming season as he struts his stuff for the Blues. He was signed for a reported £32 million and joins Marko Marin as Chelsea's signings for the new season.
