‘Wonder Years’ star Danica McKellar files for divorce, thanks fans for 'love and support during a tough time'

 

While we like to imagine "The Wonder Years" characters Winnie Cooper and Kevin Arnold growing old together, Danica McKellar's real-life marriage won't have the same happily ever after ending.

The former child star filed for divorce from her composer husband Mike Verta after three years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. In the papers, she noted that there was a pre-nuptial agreement in place. 

McKellar — who grew up to be a mathematician and author of math books for girls — and her husband have a one-year-old son named Draco, who they plan to share custody of. The baby's name generated a lot of buzz when it was announced. It means "dragon" in Latin and is also the name of a constellation. "Harry Potter" fans will remember that it was a memorable character in the J.K. Rowling book series: Draco Malfoy was young Harry's nemesis.
When McKellar married Verta in 2009, several of her "Wonder Years" co-stars were in attendance. Dan Lauria and Allie Mills, who played Kevin's (played by Fred Savage) parents on the show were there for the special day. Her real-life sister, Crystal McKellar, was her maid of honor. Crystal played Becky Slater on the show, which ran from 1988 to 1993. The couple's wedding song was "Forever in Love with You," which Verta wrote for the occasion.

After news of her divorce broke, McKellar — who still acts occasionally, appearing on TV's "The Big Bang Theory" and "How I Met Your Mother" in recent years — took to Twitter to thank her fans for their outpouring of well wishes, writing: "Thank you so much for all your love and support during a tough time!"
